How to Pack a Storage Unit Like a Pro

Whether you are storing household furniture, appliances, boxes, tools or business stock, these practical tips will help keep everything safe, accessible and organised.
1. Use Strong, Same-Size Storage Boxes
Choose sturdy, good-quality boxes that can safely support the weight of the items inside. Boxes of similar sizes are easier to stack securely and are less likely to lean, collapse or waste space.
Avoid overfilling boxes or making them too heavy to lift safely. Use smaller boxes for books, tools and other dense items, and larger boxes for lighter belongings such as bedding, clothing and soft furnishings.
Seal each box properly and label it on at least two sides. Include the room it belongs to and a short description of its contents, such as “Kitchen – Glassware” or “Office – Files”. This makes individual boxes easier to identify without unpacking an entire stack.
2. Place Heavy Items at the Bottom
Start with strong, heavy belongings at floor level. Appliances, solid furniture and boxes containing books or tools can provide a stable base for lighter items.
Do not place heavy boxes on top of fragile belongings, soft furniture or boxes that may compress. Keep the weight distributed evenly so stacks remain stable and are less likely to shift.
Where practical, leave a small gap between your belongings and the storage-unit walls. This helps maintain airflow and makes it easier to inspect the space around your items.
3. Leave a Clear Access Walkway
If you may need to retrieve belongings during the storage period, leave a walkway through the centre or along one side of the unit. Avoid packing everything tightly against the entrance.
Place items you are unlikely to need at the back and regularly used belongings closer to the front. A simple layout plan can help you remember where larger items and important boxes are located.
Although a walkway uses a small amount of floor space, it can prevent you from having to unload most of the storage unit to reach one item.
4. Protect Furniture and Mattresses
Clean and completely dry all furniture before placing it into storage. Use breathable furniture covers, clean sheets or moving blankets to protect surfaces from dust and scratches.
Use proper mattress protectors and store mattresses in a position recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid tightly wrapping wooden or fabric furniture in non-breathable plastic for extended periods, as trapped moisture may cause damage.
Dismantle tables, bed frames and other large furniture when practical. Keep screws, bolts and fittings together in a labelled bag, then securely attach the bag to the corresponding item.
Protect corners and delicate surfaces, and avoid placing heavy boxes directly on sofas, mattresses or upholstered chairs.
5. Keep Frequently Used Items Near the Door
Think about which belongings you may need before the end of the storage period. Place seasonal clothing, documents, tools, business stock and other frequently accessed items close to the unit entrance.
Keep important boxes clearly labelled and avoid burying them underneath furniture or large stacks. Transparent containers can also be useful for smaller items you expect to access regularly.
If you are storing business stock, group similar products together and face labels toward the walkway. This makes stock checks and collections faster and easier.
6. Use Vertical Storage Space Safely
All Myt4you Storage units have approximately 3.5 metres of internal height, giving you more usable vertical storage space. Making safe use of this height can significantly increase the amount you can store without taking up additional floor area.
Place heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes above them. Use stable shelving where appropriate, and make sure shelves are assembled correctly and suitable for the weight being stored.
Do not create unstable stacks or place heavy items above head height. Leave frequently used belongings within easy reach and use a suitable step ladder rather than climbing on furniture or boxes.
Our 18.8 m² storage unit provides up to 66 m³ of total storage volume—approximately 52% more than a standard 6 × 3 metre unit with a 2.4-metre internal height. Actual usable capacity will depend on the size, shape and safe stacking of your belongings.
7. Keep an Inventory of Your Stored Items
Create a written or digital inventory as you pack. Record the contents of each numbered box and note where important furniture, appliances or equipment are positioned inside the unit.
Taking a quick photo of each box before sealing it can make individual items easier to locate later. It is also helpful to photograph the packed storage unit so you have a visual record of its layout.
Keep your inventory somewhere accessible rather than inside the unit. Update it whenever you add or remove belongings.
Choose the Right Storage Unit Size
Choosing a suitable unit can make packing safer and more efficient. A unit that is too small may encourage unsafe stacking, while a much larger space may provide more room than you require.
